What is artificial intelligence- We all have heard a lot about artificial intelligence or AI. It has become the trend in the tech market. Every single tech giant companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon etc. seems to be crazy about it. But all are not in favor of it. Elon Musk thinks differently and says One-day Artificial Intelligence will destroy humans. So, Let’s find out what is Artificial Intelligence and also how dangerous or helpful it can be.
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
We all use Smart phones, right? Android and Apple phones come with a Personal Assistant feature called Ok Google and Siri. Both are powered by Artificial Intelligence and have been designed to recognize, understand and process your voice request. But these are very basic AI. We’ll see it later, for now, let’s see what is artificial intelligence?
AI is a part of computer science that aims to make machines as intelligent as us. Its the capability of computers to think and learn things as we do.
An ideal AI includes quality like the flexibility that collects information from its surroundings process that information and then takes action on the basis of that information.
AI is being used in Self-driving cars, AI assistants, strategic games etc. Recently I wrote an article about IBM’s Project debater that has been designed to debate like professional debaters.
Now you got what is Artificial Intelligence.
Let’s see some examples and Application of it.
Examples of Artificial Intelligence
Recently, Google had also launched Google Duplex which was able to talk exactly in human sound and Bill Gates in his tweet on 27th June said that AI bots defeated professional gamers at Dota2, Robot citizen Sophia and IBM’s Project debater
These examples that are enough to show that AI is going to impact our lives in the coming future and hence it becomes must for us to understand it closely.
Benefits of Artificial Intelligence.
It uses a complicated mixture of computer algorithms, mathematics, and other sciences. Complex programming helps these machines replicate the cognitive human beings abilities

We cannot deny this fact that computers are highly efficient in their jobs. They do anything almost perfectly. Well, it’s so efficient now but still, it cannot do anything on its own. It needs to get a command from the user to do its job.
Artificial Intelligence will have decision-making capabilities hence it would make computers more efficient and fast than today.
2. Personal Assistance
We all know about Google Assistant, Siri, Alexa, Cortana. These all are AI based personal assistant and improving itself over time. Recently we all have seen Google Duplex and how it made us shocked with its natural voice like humans.
Just imagine you have someone or something that-
- Assists and reminds you to take medicine, breakfast, lunch, and dinner on time.
- Tells you if it is safe or unsafe to go outside of your house.
- Suggests you where to invest your money.
- Auto adjusts things according to your mood and behavior.
So in near future, we all will have our own personal and that’s absolutely free.
3. Higher accuracy, lower error
While answering what is artificial intelligence I had said that it aims to give thinking capacity to robots/machines.
Digital devices are more accurate than us even now because it works as we program. With the help of AI, the accuracy rate will increase and this will help in many fields especially in medical fields.
It would have a low error rate as compared to humans if coded properly. They would have incredible precision, accuracy, and speed.
4. Fewer vacations
As we know machines don’t have feelings, it does for what it has been programmed. It’s neither going to celebrate any festival nor to a trip and not anything like that.
Companies need to give maternal leave to women but AI won’t need these leaves in this way one can save a lot of money spent on trips and vacations.
5. Reduce the cost of training and operation
When you hire an employee then you need to provide proper training to them but you will not need to spend your money on training of AI.
Risks with Artificial Intelligence.
Not only normal people but many tech leaders also think that there are many risks with artificial intelligence. Google CEO Sundar Pichai also accepted that we should not ignore the concerns related to AI. In one of his statements he said-
“We have learned to harness fire for the benefits of humanity but we had to overcome its downsides too. So my point is, AI is really important, but we have to be concerned about it.” source: CNBC
1. High Costs:
It needs a complicated process and rare materials to be used to build AI robots. These materials are too expensive and this will increase the overall cost of the system.
We can’t deny that it costs a lot to build, rebuild and maintain an Artificial Intelligence powered robots and other machines.
2. The threat to Human beings:
You can say how robots can be a threat to humans! It sounds baseless but trusts me it’s not. Even Tesla CEO Elon Musk thinks that AI can be undefeatable, immortal dictator.
So, if you believe that no such thing is going to happen then you should change your think and should research more about it.
Here is a tweet from Elon Musk.
If you’re not concerned about AI safety, you should be. Vastly more risk than North Korea. pic.twitter.com/2z0tiid0lc

3. Job snatch:
Artificial Intelligence is going to increase unemployment by snatching jobs for sure. Most of the repetitive job like driving, data entry call center etc will be snatched in coming years. If you are not preparing of it then you should be.
Of course, it will create new types of a job like building and maintenance of these machines. But, it will be limited in numbers.
4. Limited thinking capacity:
Robots can only do the work that they are programmed to do. They cannot act any different outside of whatever algorithm or programming is stored in their internal circuits. Robots can only do the work that they are programmed to do. They cannot act any different outside of whatever algorithm or programming is stored in their internal circuits.
5. Can’t feel Compassion and Sympathy:
No doubt those machines are better than us when it comes to working and efficiency.
And of course, it’s now getting intelligent but it will be near to impossible to replace the human connection that makes the unite. Robots cannot develop emotional bonds with humans.
6. High dependence on machines:
Today’s generation is highly dependent on Applications like Siri, Ok Google, Alexa etc. With so much assistance from the machine, if humans do not use their thinking abilities, these abilities will be gradually decreased for sure.
In future with the heavy use of application of artificial intelligence, a human may become fully dependent on machines, losing their mental capacities.
